Abstract

Soil density is an important parameter in road construction that affects the strength and stability of pavement structures. Failure to meet the required soil density standards in the subgrade and sub-base layers can lead to road deterioration, such as cracking and settlement. Commonly used testing methods, such as the sand cone test, have several limitations because they are destructive, require a relatively long testing time, and are less efficient for conducting a large number of tests. Therefore, an alternative testing method that is more practical, faster, and non-destructive to the soil structure is required. This internship aimed to design the concept of a portable impact load-based soil density measuring device integrated with GPS for the Non-Destructive Test (NDT) method. The proposed system operates by applying an impact load to the soil surface and measuring the dynamic response using an ADXL377 accelerometer sensor and a load cell sensor. The integration of GPS using the Neo-6M GPS module was designed to support the recording of testing locations, thereby enabling the analysis of soil density conditions. The device design was focused on portability and ease of field operation, and it is expected to serve as a more efficient alternative solution for supporting quality control in road construction.
