Abstract

Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) is a theory that discusses the integration of water management structures, urban design, and landscape planning. In its application, WSUD develops ecological strategies (oriented towards natural cycles) to improve the quality of urban water systems while still considering the local context. WSUD theory has five main objectives that can be addressed through an approach based on WSUD principles. This theory was developed to address the problem of suboptimal urban water management while simultaneously providing recreational space for the community. The Wonokromo Watergate area in Surabaya was chosen as the location due to its frequent flooding due to the city's suboptimal drainage system. This typology of the Watershed Management Center was chosen to examine the principles of WSUD theory and its application to the Wonokromo Watergate. This typology combines educational and recreational functions while maximizing the building's primary function, water management. This design utilizes an inductive approach, a force-based framework design methodology, and contextual design methods. The resulting design is an educational and recreational space on natural and conventional water management. The design consists of three zones. The first zone consists of an office building and a gallery. The second zone serves as the operational building for the water gate. The third zone serves as a commercial area with a cafe. With each zone serving a different function, the WSUD elements, such as the park and water management building, serve to unify the three zones.
