Abstract

Hambatan dalam lingkungan binaan tidak hanya bersifat fisik, tetapi juga melibatkan ketimpangan sosial yang muncul bahkan melalui praktik arsitektur. Universal Design yang mereka rumuskan memiliki tujuh prinsip utama yaitu, Equitable Use, Flexibility in Use, Simple and Intuitive Use, Perceptible Information, Tolerance for Error, Low Physical Effort, Size and Space for Approach and Use. Berdasarkan ketujuh prinsip ini, arsitektur memiliki tugas untuk membuat ruang yang inklusif dan adil untuk semua kelompok masyarakat. Namun, dalam konteks perkotaan di Indonesia, khususnya pada ruang publik dan ruang budaya, penerapan prinsip ini masih sangat terbatas dan minim, sehingga kelompok rentan seringkali menghadapi hambatan dalam mengakses dan menggunakan ruang secara setara. Dalam Konteks ini, kawasan waterfront memiliki potensi sebagai ruang publik yang dapat mengintegrasikan fungsi ekologis, rekreatif, dan juga budaya kota. Ruang publik waterfront memiliki karakter fisik dan sosial yang kompleks serta melibatkan keberagaman aktivitas dan pengguna, sehingga menjadi konteks yang relevan untuk mengkaji prinsip Universal Design pada penerapannya. Metode penelitian meliputi analisis kondisi tapak untuk mengevaluasi kondisi fisik dan tata ruang, analisis aktivitas pengguna dan penggunaan ruang, kajian literatur dan identifikasi masalah yang mempengaruhi pengalaman ruang di waterfront. Melalui Penerapan metode penelitian tersebut menghasilkan konsep ruang publik waterfront yang inklusif, responsif terhadap konteks kawasan, dan berorientasi pada pengalaman pengguna.

Barriers in the built environment are not only physical but also relate to social inequalities that arise even through architectural practices. Universal Design highlights seven important principles, such as Equitable Use, Flexibility in Use, Simple and Intuitive Use, Perceptible Information, Tolerance for Error, Low Physical Effort, and Size and Space for Approach and Use. Based on these principles, architecture has an ethical responsibility to create inclusive and equitable spaces for everyone. However, in the urban setting of Indonesia, especially in public and cultural areas, the implementation of these principles is still very limited and not well developed, leading to vulnerable groups facing difficulties in accessing and using spaces equally. Within this context, waterfront areas offer significant opportunities to serve as communal spaces that can integrate the city's environmental, recreational, and cultural functions. These public waterfront have complex physical and social aspects and include a variety of activities and different types of users, making them ideal locations for examining how Universal Design principles are applied in practice. The research methods used include analyzing the site's conditions to evaluate physical and spatial features, studying how users behave and use the space, conducting academic literature reviews, and identifying challenges that affect people's experiences in the waterfront environment. Through this method, the study resulted in the concept of an inclusive, responsive waterfront public space oriented toward user experience.
