Abstract

================================================================================================================================
Conceptual fragmentation in the field of Circular Business Models (CBM) has resulted in a lack of industry-specific evaluation guidelinesa challenge faced by 65% of FMCG companies according to a 2025 Accenture survey, while the Food and Beverage (F&B) sector accounts for 40.5% of Europe's plastic packaging production yet achieves a recycling rate of only 35%. Without a clear evaluation framework, corporate circularity claims risk being superficial and prone to greenwashing, and the F&B sector remains under-documented in life-cycle-based CBM evaluation studies. This research aims to map life-cycle-based evaluation methods, identify CBM types and implementation barriers, uncover gaps between academic literature (AL) and grey literature (GL), and develop an operational CBM evaluation framework for the FMCG F&B sector, employing a Multivocal Literature Review (MLR) approach that integrates both knowledge streams. Results indicate that Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) dominates both academic literature and industry practice, whereas multidimensional methods such as LCSA, S-LCA, and LCC have not yet seen widespread corporate adoption. The Bocken et al. CBM typology is rarely explicitly applied in academic literature, whereas GL is dominated by "Resource Recovery" and "Product Use Extension" types; consumer behavior is the most frequently identified implementation barrier, alongside food safety concerns specific to the F&B sector. The gap between academia and practice stems from disparities in methodological maturity; consequently, this research produces an FMCG F&B BM-C-LCSA framework that integrates four sustainability dimensions (environmental, economic, social, and circularity) across four operational stages (Goal and Scope, Life Cycle Inventory, Impact Assessment, and Interpretation) to serve as a practical guide for the FMCG F&B industry
