Abstract

Third place theory provides the main foundation for this design by emphasizing informal social spaces beyond the home and workplace that support conversation, social equality, comfort, and collective activities. Digital technology has transformed patterns of interaction and expanded the third place from a physical setting into a hybrid environment connecting face-to-face encounters with digital activities. This condition underlies the design of a community center intended to strengthen social interaction while integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) without replacing direct engagement. The design process applies the Force-Based Framework to identify context, culture, and needs, resulting in hybrid social interaction as the primary force. The Design Vignette method examines the relationships among users, activities, spaces, and digital facilities through six scenarios, while the movement and encounter strategy directs circulation toward pause points that encourage observation, encounters, conversation, and collective activities. Located in the Istana Gebang area of Blitar City, the project responds to educational, residential, historical tourism, and community activities. The design comprises an Art Gallery and Exhibition, an Innovation Hub, and communal outdoor spaces connected by a central courtyard. ICT is integrated through a portal window, interactive wall, digital exhibition, maker space, e-sports and arcade facilities, and AR/VR installations. Local identity is represented through historical information, community activities, and partitions featuring stylized turi flower and koi fish motifs. The resulting community center preserves the social qualities of a third place while responding to evolving interaction patterns in the digital era.
