Abstract
Sustainable architecture must balance environmental performance with social well-being, cultural continuity, and long-term adaptability. This challenge is acute in diplomatic design, where security and restricted access must coexist with public engagement. The proposed Indonesian Embassy and Cultural Centre in Nine Elms, London, explores how Indonesian spatial principles can be reinterpreted for a temperate climate and a regulated urban context without direct tropical replication. Applying sustainable architecture and a force-based design framework, this project negotiates the competing demands of security, public access, cultural expression, climate, and embodied carbon. The design methodology integrates site analysis, massing exploration, and technical development. Design quality is evaluated against RIBA Sustainable Outcomes and BREEAM principles, while One Click LCA measures the embodied carbon of the construction systems. The proposal comprises a vertically organized embassy and a lower cultural centre featuring nine masses around a courtyard. The embassy uses layered access and vertical zoning to transition from public to secure zones, whereas the cultural centre links exhibition, educational, and hospitality facilities using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs). The LCA achieves approximately 211 kgCO₂e/m² (an A rating), identifying steel structural elements as key targets for future carbon optimization.

Arsitektur berkelanjutan harus menyeimbangkan kinerja lingkungan dengan kesejahteraan sosial, kelangsungan budaya, dan kemampuan beradaptasi dalam jangka panjang. Tantangan ini sangat terasa dalam desain diplomatik, di mana aspek keamanan dan pembatasan akses harus dapat berdampingan dengan keterlibatan publik. Usulan Kedutaan Besar dan Pusat Kebudayaan Indonesia di Nine Elms, London, mengeksplorasi bagaimana prinsip-prinsip tata ruang Indonesia dapat ditafsirkan ulang untuk iklim sedang dan konteks perkotaan yang diatur tanpa meniru secara langsung gaya tropis. Dengan menerapkan arsitektur berkelanjutan dan kerangka kerja desain berbasis Force-Based, proyek ini menyeimbangkan tuntutan yang saling bertentangan antara keamanan, akses publik, ekspresi budaya, iklim, dan karbon tertanam. Metodologi desainnya mengintegrasikan analisis lokasi, eksplorasi massa bangunan, dan pengembangan teknis. Kualitas desain dievaluasi berdasarkan RIBA Sustainable Outcomes dan prinsip-prinsip BREEAM, sementara One Click LCA mengukur karbon tertanam dari sistem konstruksi. Proposal ini terdiri dari kedutaan yang disusun secara vertikal dan pusat budaya di bagian bawah yang menampilkan sembilan massa bangunan di sekeliling sebuah halaman. Kedutaan menggunakan akses berlapis dan zonasi vertikal untuk transisi dari zona publik ke zona aman, sedangkan pusat budaya menghubungkan fasilitas pameran, pendidikan, dan perhotelan menggunakan Panel Isolasi Struktural (SIP).
