Abstract

In fishery production activities, fish weight measurement is generally conducted using conventional methods, which are time consuming and susceptible to human recording errors, particularly in large scale catches. Therefore, this study aims to develop a digital measurement system capable of automatically estimating fish weight through image processing and a linear regression analysis approach. The methodology utilizes top view and side view images. The image processing phase begins with segmenting the fish object from a green background within the RGB color space. Geometric features are subsequently extracted to obtain length, width, and thickness dimensions in pixels, which are then calibrated into metric units (centimeters) using 10 fish samples. These physical dimension data are integrated into a multiple linear regression model to predict fish volume, followed by a simple linear regression model to generate the final weight estimation. System evaluation was conducted across five fish species, yielding error rates of 1.23% for black pomfret, 4.01% for yellowstripe scad, 4.37% for sulphur goatfish, 3.17% for red snapper, and 1.47% for grouper. The performance of the proposed system is deemed highly reliable, as all recorded error rates remain well below the maximum acceptable threshold of 10%.
