Abstract

This design project is grounded in the theory of neuroarchitecture, which asserts that architecture plays a significant role in influencing the human neurological condition. Through the neuroarchitectural approach, the built environment is not merely understood as a container for activities but as a neurological stimulus capable of affecting the stability of the brain’s electrical waves—particularly for patients in schizophrenia remission. This project proposes the design of a Post-Mental Health Community Hub as a supportive therapeutic facility that utilizes the electroencephalogram (EEG) to record and interpret patients’ brainwave activity as the basis for formulating design strategies. The Evidence-Based Design (EBD) approach is applied to ensure that every architectural decision is grounded in measurable empirical evidence, while the Force-Based Framework (FBF) serves as a conceptual framework to map EEG findings within the context of the site and its environmental conditions. Based on previous research, architectural elements such as spatial layout and acoustic design are selected to stimulate balanced alpha, beta, and theta brainwave activity, representing a relaxed and emotionally stable state. The project site is located in Lombok, chosen for its proximity to RSJ Mutiara Sukma as the primary mental health referral hospital and its abundant natural landscape, which serves as an ecological asset supporting therapeutic recovery. The design outcome is expected to produce a supportive facility that maintains the neurological stability of schizophrenia remission patients while reinforcing the integration between neuroscience and architecture. Hence, this project contributes to the development of an evidence-based architectural paradigm that bridges neurological data, spatial experience, and the humanistic meaning of architecture.
