Abstract

An urban village, as a living spatial unit, possesses social, cultural, and psychological values that shape the identity of its inhabitants. Ongoing socio-economic shifts accompanied by physical changes in the built environment have gradually weakened the role of villages as meaningful places. This condition contributes to a loss of identity and a growing sense of placelessness, particularly for non-productive age groups such as children and older adults. Drawing from theories of place identity and place attachment, this detachment emerges when everyday communal practices no longer support the cognitive, perceptual, and social processes through which emotional bonds and spatial meaning are usually developed. In the village context, social activities such as gathering and interacting serve as the primary media for building positive perception, familiarity, and a sense of belonging to the environment. This study stems from the need to design architecture capable of restoring the social and psychological values of the village through the revitalization of communal activities. The concept of “Architecture as Togetherness” is proposed as a design approach that positions architecture as a vessel for social interaction and multisensory experience that nurtures place identity and place attachment among unproductive age groups. With this approach, architecture not only as a physical space but also as a medium that shapes cognition, perception, and meaning toward place. Thus, architecture plays as a role in restoring the identity and communal life of the village, allowing it to regain its meaning and be free from placelessness.
