Abstract

Perusahaan e-commerce dan industri penyedia logistik menghadapi tantangan penting untuk memenuhi pesatnya pertumbuhan permintaan pelanggan. Unmanned aerial vehicles

E-commerce companies and logistics service providers face significant challenges in meeting rapidly growing customer demand. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), such as drones, have emerged as a promising technology for addressing customers' increasing expectations for fast, flexible, and reliable delivery services. Unlike conventional truck-based delivery, drones are not constrained by road networks or traffic congestion, thereby reducing the risk of delivery delays. Effective coordination between trucks and drones in last-mile delivery operations has been shown to reduce transportation costs, carbon emissions, and delivery times. In this delivery system, a drone is launched from a truck, serves multiple customer locations, and subsequently rendezvous with the same truck. This logistics configuration is referred to as the Two-Echelon Vehicle Routing Problem with Drones (2E-VRPD). In addition to economic considerations, logistics providers must also account for the environmental impacts associated with order fulfillment operations. This study proposes a new multi-objective model that simultaneously minimizes total truck travel time and total carbon emissions. A dynamic drone energy consumption model, in which energy usage varies according to the payload carried by the drone, is incorporated to provide a more realistic representation of actual operating conditions. The resulting optimization problem is solved using the Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) with two solution approaches: the Giant Chromosome (GC) approach and the K-means clustering approach. Truck and drone routes are subsequently constructed using the proposed heuristic routing algorithm. Overall, the K-means approach achieved better average objective values, indicating superior exploitation capability in identifying high-quality solutions. In contrast, the GC approach produced a higher Hypervolume (HV), indicating better convergence toward the Pareto-optimal front and broader Pareto front coverage, while also achieving lower Spacing values, reflecting a more uniform distribution of Pareto solutions. A sensitivity analysis was further conducted by increasing the drone payload capacity to evaluate its impact on the proposed optimization framework. The results demonstrate that drones with larger payload capacities further reduce truck travel time and carbon emissions under both solution approaches. This study contributes to the literature on 2E-VRPD by jointly minimizing truck travel time and total carbon emissions while incorporating a dynamic drone energy consumption model. From a practical perspective, the proposed framework provides decision support for e-commerce companies and logistics service providers in addressing the operational challenges posed by rapidly
increasing customer demand through more efficient and environmentally sustainable last-mile delivery operations.
