Abstract

This design formulates an architectural response based on Environmental Stress Theory for an Integrated Mental Rehabilitation-Addiction Center in the post-stabilization phase located in Klaten, Central Java. The design is motivated by the understanding in Environmental Stress Theory that stress arises when environmental demands exceed individual capacity so that spatial interventions need to be directed at reducing stressor exposure and strengthening the appraisal and coping processes towards a state of recovery. The main problem is focused on the integration of clinical needs for addiction rehabilitation and mental health recovery in one integrated facility aimed at creating a recovery environment through positive distraction. Target users include post-stabilization patients with moderate-severe methamphetamine use disorders and patients with mild-moderate internalizing disorders, along with their families, clinical and nonclinical staff, and service partners. The design methodology combines Evidence-Based Design and Force-Based Framework through six stages: goal setting and site analysis, evidence mapping and forces identification, synthesis of criteria, hypotheses, and strategies, testing and iteration, finalization and assembly of the system, and preparation of the design proposal. Stressors identified through theoretical review and analysis of three precedents (St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, CAMH, and Herrington Recovery Center) were then translated into forces in the form of assets, constraints, and pressures to guide design decisions, and then synthesized into design principles and concepts.
