Abstract

Kampung kota sebagai permukiman padat di wilayah urban memiliki kedekatan ruang antara hunian, gang, aktivitas sosial, dan infrastruktur transportasi. Kondisi tersebut membuat ruang domestik rentan mengalami intrusi suara, terutama pada hunian yang berdekatan dengan jalur rel kereta api. Intrusi suara tidak hanya memengaruhi kenyamanan akustik, tetapi juga berkaitan dengan privasi, kontrol ruang, dan keberlangsungan aktivitas penghuni. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengidentifikasi adaptasi spasial penghuni, memahami persepsi terhadap keterbatasan adaptasi, serta merumuskan strategi pengelolaan batas sonik domestik. Penelitian dilakukan di Kampung Gubeng, Surabaya, menggunakan pendekatan Concurrent Embedded Mixed Methods yang menempatkan data kualitatif-spasial sebagai data dominan dan data kuantitatif-akustik sebagai pendukung. Data diperoleh melalui observasi spasial, home tour, wawancara mendalam, dokumentasi, pemetaan ruang, pencatatan aktivitas, serta pengukuran tingkat tekanan suara dan frekuensi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jarak terhadap rel bukan satu-satunya penentu paparan suara karena arah gang, celah antarmassa, kepadatan bangunan, elevasi, dan posisi bukaan membentuk jalur rambat yang berbeda. Adaptasi penghuni paling banyak berupa reaction, sedangkan adjustment bergantung pada pengaturan bukaan, elemen ruang, pemilihan ruang, dan waktu aktivitas. Withdrawal cenderung terbatas karena tidak semua hunian memiliki ruang alternatif. Persepsi penghuni memperlihatkan bahwa terbiasa terhadap suara tidak selalu berarti terlindungi dari gangguan. Gangguan tersebut tetap memengaruhi percakapan, istirahat, tidur, dan kegiatan domestik yang membutuhkan konsentrasi. Strategi pengelolaan diarahkan pada penguatan ambang, pengendalian bukaan, pemanfaatan ruang dan elemen sebagai buffer, perlindungan quiet side, serta penyesuaian aktivitas sensitif. Penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa batas sonik domestik terbentuk sebagai sistem lapisan spasial dan perilaku yang menghubungkan kondisi lingkungan, konfigurasi hunian, elemen ruang, privasi, dan kontrol penghuni.

Urban kampungs are characterized by close relationships among dwellings, alleys, social activities, and transportation infrastructure. This condition makes domestic spaces vulnerable to sound intrusion, particularly in dwellings near railway tracks. Sound intrusion affects acoustic comfort, privacy, spatial control, and continuity of residents’ activities. This study aims to identify spatial adaptations, understand perceptions of adaptation limitations, and formulate strategies for managing domestic sonic boundaries. Conducted in Kampung Gubeng, Surabaya, the research used a Concurrent Embedded Mixed Methods approach, with qualitative-spatial data as the dominant component and quantitative-acoustic data as supporting evidence. Data were collected through spatial observation, home tours, in-depth interviews, documentation, spatial mapping, activity records, and measurements of sound pressure levels and frequency. Findings show that distance from the railway is not the sole determinant of exposure because alley orientation, gaps between building masses, building density, elevation, and opening positions create different sound propagation paths. Adaptations predominantly take the form of reaction, while adjustment depends on opening control, spatial elements, room selection, and activity timing. Withdrawal remains limited because not all dwellings provide alternative spaces. Residents’ perceptions indicate that becoming accustomed to sound does not necessarily mean being protected from disturbance. Sound intrusion continues to affect conversation, rest, sleep, and domestic activities requiring concentration. Proposed strategies include reinforcing thresholds, controlling openings, using spaces and elements as buffers, protecting the quiet side, and adjusting sound-sensitive activities. This study confirms that domestic sonic boundaries operate as layered spatial and behavioral systems connecting environmental conditions, dwelling configuration, spatial elements, privacy, and residents’ control.
