Abstract

Malang Regency is one of the main coffee production centers in East Java. The demand for coffee exports from this region reaches approximately 45,000 tons per year, while local
production capacity only amounts to around 15,000 tons per year. This condition indicates a production gap of approximately 30,000 tons per year that needs to be fulfilled. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the spatial distribution of potential areas for coffee cultivation in Malang Regency as a basis for developing new plantation land. This research was conducted in two stages. The first stage involved determining suitable land for Arabica and Robusta coffee development using the matching and overlay method based on FAO (1976). The second stage aimed to identify the characteristics, potential, and problems of land suitable for coffee cultivation using descriptive analysis. The results show that land physically potential for coffee development in Malang Regency consists of S2 actual and S2 potential classes. The total area of potential land reaches 189,660.89 ha with an estimated production potential of 248,359.71 tons per year. Robusta coffee development potential is more dominant, covering 168,053.84 ha with an estimated production of 223,511.61 tons per year, while Arabica coffee has a potential area of 21,607.05 ha with an estimated production of 24,848.10 tons per year. Based on its characteristics, some existing coffee plantations have fairly regular planting patterns, while others are still planted irregularly. The shade trees used are also diverse, including sengon, pine, mahogany, durian, coconut, and banana, with varying densities. Development potential is indicated by the presence of S2 actual and S2 potential land that is physically capable of supporting coffee cultivation, including land not yet utilized as coffee plantations. Most S2 potential land outside existing coffee plantations also requires low levels of intervention, making it feasible for development through dynamic limiting factor management. The problems identified include the existence of coffee plantations on S3 and N suitability classes, resulting in suboptimal production. Additionally, some land that is physically suitable under S2 actual and S2 potential classes is currently still used for other purposes, such as rice fields, dry fields, farmland, and other productive commodities.
