Abstract

Architecture not only shapes physical space but also serves as a medium that influences the psychological and spiritual experiences of its users. In the urban context of Surabaya, particularly along the MERR Kedung Baruk corridor, which is characterized by high-density activities, intense mobility, and a lack of reflective spaces, the community faces environmental pressures that may diminish opportunities for mental and spiritual restoration. This condition highlights the need for a public space that not only accommodates functional activities but also provides a restorative spatial experience.
This design project aims to develop an Islamic Center as an urban healing sanctuary through the application of sacred geometry as the primary theoretical framework and generative tool for shaping spatial quality. The principles of axis and orientation, center and hierarchy, golden ratio, and spatial order are applied to establish a spatial organization that is coherent, legible, and spiritually meaningful. The implementation of these principles is intended to achieve psychological security as the desired design outcome. Meanwhile, the concept of Marātib an-Nafs is employed as a narrative framework that translates the user's psychological and spiritual journey into three sequential spatial stages: Nafs Ammarah, Nafs Lawwamah, and Nafs Mutma'innah, through the design of massing, circulation, natural lighting, materiality, and the integration of water and vegetation.
The design results demonstrate that the application of sacred geometry is capable of establishing a structured, hierarchical, and contemplative spatial experience. The design integrates the worship area and the psychological healing center through layered zoning, landscape buffer systems, and the manipulation of light and materials, which gradually guide the psychological transformation of the users. Thus, the Islamic Center serves not only as a worship facility but also as a psychological and spiritual healing space that is responsive to the dynamics of urban life.
