Abstract

Conventional architecture, with its focus on comfort and function, often glosses over a site's repressed histories, contributing to cultural amnesia. This design proposal investigates architecture as an active medium for critical reflection and spatial protest within a museum, employing the theoretical lens of "The Architectural Uncanny" (Vidler, 1992). The project aims to challenge archetypal notions of the "homely" to reveal the "unhomely" lurking within, using "Uncertainty about Reality" as its core conceptual mechanism. The methodology utilizes a "Concept-based Framework" to translate this abstract psychoanalytic theory into a tangible architectural syntax of form, material, and sequence. The design object is a Subterranean Memorial Museum, a narrative-driven spatial intervention structured as a "choreographed spatial sequence" that uses "Calibrated Disorientation". The chosen site is the "Rumah Radio Bung Tomo" in Surabaya, a location of historical significance that suffered a violent demolition in 2016, symbolizing the silencing of a nation's resistance. The project's primary objective is to embed this repressed trauma into the architectural narrative. By subjecting the user to dictatorial circulation and calculated spatial discomfort, the design transforms them from a "Passive Observer" into an "Active Confrontationist". Ultimately, architecture acts as an active instrument of critique, guiding the occupant from a state of cultural amnesia toward one of active, critical reflection on the site's erased identity.

Arsitektur konvensional, dengan fokusnya pada kenyamanan dan fungsi, sering kali mengabaikan sejarah-sejarah terpendam (repressed) suatu tapak, yang berkontribusi pada amnesia kultural. Proposal desain ini menyelidiki arsitektur sebagai media aktif untuk refleksi kritis dan protes spasial pada musuem, dengan menggunakan lensa teoretis "The Architectural Uncanny" (Vidler, 1992). Proyek ini bertujuan untuk menantang gagasan arketipal tentang 'homely' (rasa nyaman) untuk mengungkap 'unhomely' (rasa asing) yang tersembunyi di dalamnya, menggunakan "Uncertainty about Reality" (Keraguan akan Realitas) sebagai mekanisme konseptual intinya.
Metodologi yang digunakan adalah "Concept-based Framework" (Kerangka Kerja Berbasis Konsep) untuk menerjemahkan teori psikoanalisis abstrak ini ke dalam sintaksis arsitektur yang nyata berupa bentuk, material, dan sekuens ruang. Objek desainnya adalah Subterranean Memorial Museum yang digerakkan oleh narasi, terstruktur sebagai "sekuens spasial terkoreografi" yang menggunakan "Calibrated Disorientation" (Disorientasi Terkalibrasi). Tapak yang dipilih adalah "Rumah Radio Bung Tomo" di Surabaya, sebuah lokasi dengan signifikansi historis yang mengalami pembongkaran brutal pada tahun 2016, menyimbolkan pembungkaman memori perlawanan. Tujuan utama proyek ini adalah untuk menanamkan trauma terpendam tapak tersebut ke dalam narasi arsitektural. Dengan menempatkan pengguna pada sirkulasi yang diktator dan ketidaknyamanan ruang yang terkalkulasi, desain ini mengubah pengguna dari "Pengamat Pasif" (Passive Observer) menjadi "Konfrontasionis Aktif" (Active Confrontationist). Pada akhirnya, arsitektur ini bertindak sebagai instrumen kritik, membimbing pengguna dari kondisi amnesia kultural menuju refleksi kritis yang aktif terhadap sejarah tapak yang telah direnggut.
