Abstract

Arsitektur nightlife umumnya dibentuk melalui ekspresi visual, aktivitas komersial, dan interior yang terkontrol, sementara bunyi lebih sering diperlakukan sebagai kebisingan yang perlu dikurangi. Dalam kondisi nokturnal, bunyi justru berperan penting dalam membentuk persepsi ruang, kehadiran tubuh, dan interaksi sosial. Penelitian perancangan ini mengkaji bagaimana arsitektur nightlife dapat bekerja bukan sebagai nightclub tertutup, tetapi sebagai sistem ruang nokturnal yang menempatkan bunyi sebagai material pengalaman. Malioboro dipilih sebagai konteks perancangan karena soundscape malamnya terbentuk oleh tumpang tindih bunyi kendaraan, aktivitas ruko, percakapan, performer jalanan, crowd, dan pergerakan pedestrian. Perancangan menggunakan Phenomenology of Sonic Materiality sebagai pendekatan dan Concept-Based Framework sebagai metodologi. Data dari 42 titik pengukuran dianalisis menggunakan LAeq, standar deviasi, dan range, kemudian disintesis dengan receiver-based dominance, tipologi perilaku, aktivitas eksisting, serta kondisi fisik ruko, arcade, dan trotoar. Analisis menghasilkan variasi kondisi dominansi, konflik, transisi, dan release yang menjadi dasar segmentasi sonic-social corridor. Hasil perancangan berupa keluarga sonic-social apparatus yang menempel, menyisip, atau berdiri ringan pada koridor eksisting, meliputi low plinth, back reflector, perforated acoustic bench, tuned soffit, adaptive frontage, perforated sonic veil, dan acoustic leaning rail. Perancangan menunjukkan bahwa arsitektur dapat memodulasi dominansi bunyi melalui operasi frame, filter, diffuse, redirect, hold, guide, contain, dan release. Dengan demikian, burst dan silence tidak dipahami sebagai dua kondisi absolut, tetapi sebagai sekuens terkalibrasi yang terbentuk melalui hubungan antara bunyi, tubuh, aktivitas sosial, dan lingkungan urban nokturnal.

Nightlife architecture is commonly shaped through visual expression, commercial activity, and controlled interiors, while sound is treated mainly as noise to be reduced. Under nocturnal conditions, however, sound becomes important in shaping spatial perception, bodily presence, and social interaction. This design research investigates how nightlife architecture can operate not as an enclosed nightclub, but as a nocturnal spatial system that positions sound as a material of experience. Malioboro was selected as the design context because its nighttime soundscape is formed by overlapping traffic, shopfront activities, conversations, street performers, crowds, and pedestrian movement. The research applies the Phenomenology of Sonic Materiality as its design approach and the Concept-Based Framework as its methodology. Data from 42 measurement points were analyzed using LAeq, standard deviation, and range, then synthesized with receiver-based dominance, behaviour typologies, existing activities, and the physical conditions of shopfronts, arcades, and sidewalks. The analysis identified varying conditions of dominance, conflict, transition, and release, which informed the segmentation of a sonic-social corridor. The resulting design consists of a family of sonic-social apparatuses attached to, inserted into, or placed lightly within the existing corridor, including low plinths, back reflectors, perforated acoustic benches, tuned soffits, adaptive frontages, perforated sonic veils, and acoustic leaning rails. The design demonstrates that architecture can modulate sonic dominance through operations of framing, filtering, diffusing, redirecting, holding, guiding, containing, and releasing. Burst and silence are therefore understood not as absolute opposites, but as calibrated sequences formed through the relationship between sound, body, social activity, and the nocturnal urban environment.
