Abstract
This undergraduate project begins from the perspective of Geological Architecture, which understands architecture as part of the earth’s dynamic processes and shaped by the continuous forces that act upon it. When this framework is placed within post-mining landscapes, it becomes evident that environmental degradation is intensified by the long-term consequences of the Capitalocene, a mode of development that prioritises short-term gains while leaving long-term ecological damage. In response, the project investigates how architecture can participate in landscape recovery without assuming permanent control over ecological processes. To develop this proposition, the theory of Sympoiesis provides the conceptual foundation, emphasising making-with between humans and ecological systems rather than human control over nature. Through this perspective, architecture is conceived as a temporary participant within broader ecological systems, supporting regeneration through adaptive interventions that evolve alongside environmental succession. The design is operationalised through an adaptive succession framework that gradually shifts from active restoration and ecological monitoring toward selective withdrawal as ecosystem functions become increasingly self-sustaining. Rather than resisting material weathering, the project incorporates controlled decay and the ecological afterlife of architectural elements as part of the restoration process. Ultimately, the project proposes architecture as a mediator that facilitates the slow rebuilding of post-extraction terrain while progressively relinquishing its role as the recovering landscape regains autonomy.
