Abstract

The theory “Beyond Placelessness: Place Identity and the Global City” explains how a place’s identity is formed through the presence of visual (tangible) cues as well as the role of non-visual elements such as sensory (intangible) cues. Personal experiences create a deeper sense of identity and shape meaning; this relates to the formation of memories of a place from the user’s perspective. This theory is further supported by multi-sensory experiences that focus on embodied experience through human sensory interaction with space. This theory serves as the foundation for addressing issues surrounding the image of Kayoon Flower Market, where economic pressures and declining activity risk diminishing the spatial experience. This study aims to conceptualize architecture as an object of sensory mediation to preserve layers of experience and to develop a design that can sustain a place’s identity. Research-based design through precedent analysis, site analysis, analogy, and overarching concepts resulted in a schematic design proposal for a flower market-garden. The concept of “Architecture as Mediator” is applied through multi-sensory architecture as a design approach. The result is a multi-sensory market-garden arrangement, gradual mass development, and productive landscape integration that connects market activities, landscape, and sensory experiences to reaffirm Kayoon’s identity as Surabaya’s flower hub through a spatial experience that is more legible, vibrant, and memorable for visitors.

Teori Beyond Placelessness: Place Identity and The Global City menjelaskan mengenai terbentuknya identitas suatu tempat dari keberadaan petunjuk visual (tangible) dan juga peran dari elemen non-visual seperti petunjuk sensoris (intangible). Pengalaman pribadi menciptakan identitas yang lebih mendalam dan membentuk makna, hal ini berkaitan dengan pembentukan memori terhadap suatu tempat dari perspektif pengguna. Teori ini didukung lebih lanjut oleh pengalaman multi-sensori yang berfokus pada embodied experience melalui interaksi sensoris manusia dengan ruang. Teori ini diterapkan sebagai dasar untuk merespon permasalahan citra Pasar Bunga Kayoon, di mana tekanan ekonomi dan penurunan aktivitas berisiko mengurangi pengalaman spasial. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengkonseptualisasikan arsitektur sebagai objek mediasi sensoris untuk mempertahankan lapisan pengalaman, dan mengembangkan desain yang dapat mempertahankan identitas suatu tempat. Perancangan berbasis riset melalui analisis preseden, analisis tapak, analogi, dan ide besar menghasilkan proposal desain skematik pasar taman bunga. Gagasan Arsitektur sebagai Mediator diterapkan melalui arsitektur multi-sensori sebagai pendekatan desain. Hasilnya berupa tatanan pasar-taman berbasis multi-sensori, pengelompokan massa bergradasi, dan integrasi lanskap produktif yang menghubungkan kegiatan pasar, lanskap, dan pengalaman sensoris untuk memperkuat kembali identitas Kayoon sebagai pusat bunga Surabaya melalui pengalaman ruang yang lebih terbaca, hidup, dan berkesan bagi para pengunjung.
