Abstract

The growth of the music industry in Indonesia shows an increase in the participation of urban communities in national and international concerts. However, most music performance facilities in Indonesia are adaptations of sports halls or convention centers, which result in significant limitations in acoustic quality, audience comfort, and spatial experience. Surabaya, as the second largest metropolitan city in Indonesia and the economic and cultural center of East Java, does not yet have a concert hall specifically designed for music performances. This study proposes the design of a concert hall in Surabaya using an integrated approach between a force-based framework (Plowright) and a parametric design strategy. The force-based framework allows for comprehensive identification of various design drivers ranging from environmental forces (tropical climate, urban context), acoustic forces (ISO standards, local musical preferences such as gamelan), to ergonomic and cultural forces (audience comfort, local cultural identity). Each force is translated into a measurement parameter that controls the geometry of the space: room dimensions, audience floor slope, acoustic surface geometry, and climate-responsive envelope system. The parametric approach facilitates systematic exploration of various design solutions, where each variation can be acoustically validated using simulation software. The research results in an acoustically optimal concert hall design that is climate-responsive and grounded in the cultural context of Surabaya. In addition to the physical contribution of a high-quality performance facility, this research demonstrates how a force-based framework and parametric design can be combined to produce architecture that is responsive to the complexity of user needs and the local context.
