Abstract

Emisi gas buang mesin diesel merupakan salah satu sumber pencemar udara yang mengandung Particulate Matter (PM) dan berpotensi menimbulkan dampak terhadap kesehatan manusia serta lingkungan. Salah satu upaya untuk mengurangi emisi partikulat adalah memanfaatkan karbon aktif berbahan biomassa sebagai media filtrasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis efektivitas media filter berbasis karbon aktif daun mangga (Mangifera indica) dalam menurunkan konsentrasi PM2,5 dan PM10 pada gas buang mesin diesel serta mengetahui pengaruh variasi tingkat kekeringan media terhadap efektivitas penurunan Particulate Matter. Penelitian dilakukan menggunakan metode eksperimen dengan media filter karbon aktif daun mangga yang memiliki tingkat kekeringan 82%, 87%, dan 91%. Pengujian dilakukan pada mesin diesel satu silinder dengan variasi putaran mesin 1100 RPM, 1650 RPM, dan 2200 RPM serta variasi beban 1000 Watt, 2000 Watt, dan 3000 Watt. Konsentrasi PM2,5 dan PM10 diukur menggunakan particle counter, sedangkan tingkat kekeringan media diukur menggunakan moisture meter. Efektivitas media filter dihitung berdasarkan persentase penurunan konsentrasi emisi sebelum dan sesudah pemasangan filter. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa media karbon aktif daun mangga mampu menurunkan konsentrasi PM2,5 dan PM10 pada seluruh variasi putaran mesin dan beban pengujian. Rata-rata efektivitas penurunan PM2,5 berturut-turut sebesar 10,24%, 24,48%, dan 26,37% pada tingkat kekeringan media 82%, 87%, dan 91%, sedangkan rata-rata efektivitas penurunan PM10 sebesar 10,39%, 26,20%, dan 23,88%. Variasi tingkat kekeringan media berpengaruh terhadap efektivitas penurunan Particulate Matter. Efektivitas penurunan PM2,5 meningkat seiring bertambahnya tingkat kekeringan media, sedangkan efektivitas penurunan PM10 mencapai nilai optimum pada tingkat kekeringan media 87% sebelum mengalami sedikit penurunan pada tingkat kekeringan 91%. Dengan demikian, media karbon aktif daun mangga terbukti efektif sebagai media filtrasi untuk menurunkan emisi Particulate Matter pada mesin diesel.

Diesel engine exhaust emissions are one of the major sources of air pollution containing Particulate Matter (PM), which poses significant risks to human health and the environment. One promising approach to reducing particulate emissions is the utilization of biomass-based activated carbon as a filtration medium. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of activated carbon derived from mango leaves (Mangifera indica) in reducing PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations in diesel engine exhaust emissions and to investigate the effect of different filter media dryness levels on particulate removal efficiency. An experimental method was employed using activated carbon filter media prepared from mango leaves with dryness levels of 82%, 87%, and 91%. The experiments were conducted on a single-cylinder diesel engine operated at engine speeds of 1100, 1650, and 2200 RPM under electrical loads of 1000 W, 2000 W, and 3000 W. PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations were measured using a particle counter, while the filter media dryness level was determined using a moisture meter. Filtration effectiveness was calculated based on the percentage reduction in particulate concentrations before and after filter installation. The results demonstrated that activated carbon derived from mango leaves effectively reduced PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations under all engine speed and load conditions. The average PM2.5 removal efficiencies were 10.24%, 24.48%, and 26.37% at filter media dryness levels of 82%, 87%, and 91%, respectively, while the average PM10 removal efficiencies were 10.39%, 26.20%, and 23.88%, respectively. The filter media dryness level significantly affected particulate removal performance. PM2.5 removal efficiency consistently increased with increasing dryness level, whereas PM10 removal efficiency reached its optimum at the 87% dryness level before slightly decreasing at the 91% dryness level. Therefore, activated carbon derived from mango leaves has considerable potential as an effective filtration medium for reducing Particulate Matter emissions from diesel engines.
