Abstract

Menurut buku Art and Architecture: A Place Between (2006), Jane Rendell memperkenalkan konsep Critical Spatial Practice sebagai cara baru untuk mengevaluasi peran arsitektur dalam masyarakat. Ia berargumen bahwa arsitektur tidak seharusnya terikat pada fungsi atau citra, melainkan harus menempati ‘ruang di antara’ seni, aktivitas sosial, dan teori. Keadaan transisi ini menjadi landasan konseptual di mana arsitektur diposisikan ulang sebagai bentuk produksi budaya yang melibatkan pengalaman multisensori yang terwujud, memicu refleksi, dan melibatkan pengguna. Rendell mengembangkan metode pemikiran desain untuk menetapkan posisi ini daripada menggunakan aturan perspektif. Metode ini dimulai dengan pengakuan ‘ruang di antara’, dilanjutkan dengan analisis spesifik lokasi, dan mengintegrasikan kerangka interdisipliner seperti teori kritis, teori feminis, dan teori kritis yang diuji secara berulang menggunakan studi kasus. Metode ini menyoroti tiga aspek utama: temporal, refleksivitas, dan relasional sebagai inti keterlibatan arsitektur. Dengan menggunakan metode ini, arsitektur berubah dari komoditas pasif yang didorong oleh gambar menjadi kanvas hidup yang secara aktif memengaruhi makna budaya, interaksi sosial, dan refleksi kritis. Sebagai implementasi teori ini, proyek ini bertujuan untuk menciptakan ruang sosial yang berfokus pada penerapan seni dalam konteks sosiobudaya lokal ke dalam desain, dengan harapan menciptakan cara-cara baru dalam bersosialisasi. Dalam konteks perkotaan kontemporer, pendekatan ini relevan untuk merespons kecenderungan arsitektur yang tereduksi sebagai latar visual dan komoditas konsumsi. Dengan memposisikan ruang sebagai medium negosiasi sosial, proyek ini menekankan pengalaman spasial yang terbuka, partisipatif, dan kontekstual, sehingga arsitektur dapat berperan sebagai pemicu dialog serta memperkuat relasi sosial dan kesadaran kritis pengguna terhadap ruang dan budaya sekitarnya.

Jane Rendell’s Art and Architecture: A Place Between (2006) introduces the idea of critical spatial practice as a new way to review the role of architecture in society. She argues that architecture should not be fixed to the function or image, but it should occupy the ‘place between’ art, social activity, and theory. This transitional state becomes a conceptual ground where architecture is repositioned as a form of cultural production that engages through embodied, multi-sensory experiences that provoke reflection and engage users. Rendell expanded a design thinking method to establish this position rather than using a rule of perspective. This method started with the recognition of ‘in betweenness ’, then proceeded through site-specific analysis, incorporating interdisciplinary frameworks such as critical theory, feminist theory, and critical theory that is tested iteratively using case studies. This method highlights the three main aspects of temporality, reflexivity, and relationality as the core of architectural engagement. By using this method, architecture is then changed from a passive, image-driven commodity into a living canvas that actively influences cultural meaning, social interaction, and critical reflection. As the implementation of the theory, this project aims to create a social space that focuses on integrating art with the local socio-cultural context to the design in hope to create new ways of socializing. Within contemporary urban conditions, this approach responds to the reduction of architecture into a visual backdrop and consumable commodity. By positioning space as a medium of social interaction, the project emphasizes open, participatory, and context-driven spatial experiences, allowing architecture to act as a medium for dialogue while strengthening social relations and users’ critical awareness of space and culture.
