Abstract

Ethical Function dalam arsitektur, menurut Karsten Harries berbicara mengenai tugasnya dalam mengartikulasikan ethos bersama suatu komunitas, tentang bagaimana manusia “berdiam” di dunia melampaui pertimbangan utilitas dan estetika bangunan. Dalam Teori The Ethical Function of Architecture, arsitektur memiliki peran dalam memberi makna, arah, dan orientasi bagi kehidupan manusia pada fenomena “The terror of time” (kecemasan eksistensial atas kefanaan dunia) dimana manusia cenderung menghindari kesadaran akan kefanaan dirinya dengan mencari pelarian dari ketakutan terhadap waktu yang membebaninya setiap saat. Sehingga muncul pertanyaan, apakah arsitektur bisa membantu manusia menghadapi perasaan cemas, takut, dan kehilangan yang timbul akibat sifat kefanaan? bagaimana bentuk peran etis dimediasi oleh arsitektur? Perancangan Poetic Space ini akan mengaplikasikan prinsip desain dari ruang kontemplasi serta ruang kreatif yang memfasilitasi atau mewadahi pengolahan-pengolahan emosi dengan menautkan Ethical Function of Architecture Karsten Harries dan Atmospheres Peter Zumthor. Melalui analogi stange of human psychological condition yang didapat dari pendekatan Psychoanalysis The Denial of Death Ernest Becker, sekuens bangunan diciptakan untuk memenuhi tingkat kepekaan emosional yang terbentuk. Dengan begitu, rancangan ini diharapkan dapat memperluas peran etis arsitektur sebagai medium Catharsis, yang dinyatakan Aristoteles sebagai proses melepaskan emosi dalam diri manusia yang terbelenggu melalui dukungan dari seni (Art Proper) sebagai alat komunikasi non-verbal untuk menstimulasi imajinasi manusia dalam menghasilkan karya seni sebagai simbol keabadian dirinya.

The Ethical Function of architecture, according to Karsten Harries, refers to its role in articulating the shared ethos of a community, about how humans “dwell” in the world beyond considerations of utility and aesthetics of buildings. In The Ethical Function of Architecture, architecture has a role in giving meaning, direction, and orientation to human life in the phenomenon of “The terror of time” (existential anxiety about the transience of the world) where humans tend to avoid awareness of their own transience by seeking escape from the fear of time that burdens them at every moment. This raises the question: can architecture help humans deal with feelings of anxiety, fear, and loss arising from transience? How is the ethical role mediated by architecture? The design of this Poetic Space will apply the design principles of contemplative spaces and creative spaces that facilitate or accommodate emotional processing by linking Karsten Harries' Ethical Function of Architecture and Peter Zumthor's Atmospheres. Through the analogy of the stages of human psychological condition derived from Ernest Becker's Psychoanalysis: The Denial of Death, the building sequence is created to meet the level of emotional sensitivity that is formed. Thus, this design is expected to expand the ethical role of architecture as a medium of catharsis, which Aristotle defined as the process of releasing emotions within humans that are shackled through the support of art (Art Proper) as a non-verbal communication tool to stimulate human imagination in producing works of art as symbols of their immortality.
