Abstract

The global fast fashion industry has triggered significant accumulation of textile waste, with Indonesia generating approximately 1 million tons of waste annually and a low recycling rate of only 13%. Most pre-consumption solid waste, such as fabric scraps, is limited to low-value recycling (downcycling) into simple products, which often leads to fiber degradation and limited aesthetic value. Conversely, Jember Regency possesses a strong cultural potential through its tobacco-themed batik motifs, yet local MSMEs face challenges in product diversification and a lack of media to promote local identity beyond conventional clothing. This research aims to explore the potential of solid textile waste (polyester and cotton scraps) as decorative visual materials through eco-friendly processing techniques while integrating Jember's distinctive batik visual elements to strengthen local identity. The study employs the Design Thinking approach combined with the ATUMICS framework (Artefact, Technique, Utility, Material, Icon, Concept, Shape) to ensure a synergy between material innovation and cultural narrative. Material exploration focuses on mechanical and composite techniques using bio-polymer adhesives (corn/tapioca starch) and mineral matrices (gypsum) to create new visual planes without generating additional derivative waste. The expected outcome of this research is an alternative decorative material and functional appliance products that possess high aesthetic and promotional value, serving as a sustainable innovation model for the creative industry in Jember.
