Abstract

Pertumbuhan kota di negara berkembang mendorong terbentuknya kawasan marginal yang berkembang melalui praktik urban informality sebagai respons terhadap keterbatasan sistem formal. Meskipun adaptif, kawasan marginal sering menghadapi stigma, segregasi, dan penurunan kualitas ruang yang berdampak pada hilangnya spatial dignity. Perancangan ini mengusulkan Informal Armatures sebagai strategi negosiasi antara ruang formal dan informal untuk mendukung pemulihan sosial dan regenerasi citra kawasan. Metode perancangan menggunakan Contextualism dengan Force-based framework sebagai kerangka analisis untuk mengidentifikasi kekuatan sosial, budaya, ekonomi, dan spasial yang membentuk karakter kawasan. Hasil analisis diterjemahkan ke dalam pendekatan Informal Armatures melalui pembentukan corridors sebagai jaringan konektivitas dan ruang publik, patches sebagai simpul aktivitas sosial dan ekonomi, serta stewards sebagai mekanisme pengelolaan berbasis komunitas. Konteks perancangan difokuskan pada kawasan eks-lokalisasi Sarirejo, Kota Salatiga, yang kerap terjebak dalam lingkaran marginalisasi dan stigma. Hasil perancangan menunjukkan bahwa strategi ini memicu transformasi sosial melalui intervensi spasial yang meningkatkan konektivitas, membuka peluang interaksi antarkelompok masyarakat, memperkuat kohesi sosial, mengurangi stigma kawasan, dan secara bertahap memulihkan martabat ruang.

Urban growth in developing countries has contributed to the emergence of marginalized areas shaped by urban informality as a response to the limitations of formal planning systems. Although adaptive in nature, these areas often experience social stigma, spatial segregation, and declining environmental quality, leading to the loss of spatial dignity. This project proposes the Informal Armatures approach as a strategy to negotiate the relationship between formal and informal urban systems in order to support social recovery and the regeneration of place identity. The design employs a Contextualism approach, with the Force-based framework serving as the analytical framework to identify the social, cultural, economic, and spatial forces that shape the character of the site. The identified forces are translated into the Informal Armatures strategy through the development of corridors as connective public networks, patches as nodes of social and economic activities, and stewards as community-based management mechanisms. The design focuses on the former red-light district of Sarirejo in Salatiga City, Indonesia, an area that has long been trapped in a cycle of marginalization and social stigma. The proposed intervention demonstrates that spatial transformation can stimulate social regeneration by improving connectivity, creating opportunities for interaction among different community groups, strengthening social cohesion, reducing negative perceptions of the area, and gradually restoring spatial dignity.
