Abstract

Biodiesel B100 merupakan bahan bakar alternatif yang ramah lingkungan, namun memiliki kelemahan berupa stabilitas penyimpanan yang rendah akibat proses oksidasi, penyerapan uap air, dan pertumbuhan mikroorganisme. Proses degradasi tersebut dapat menyebabkan perubahan sifat fisik-kimia biodiesel yang berdampak pada penurunan performa mesin diesel. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis efektivitas metode nitrogen blanketing dalam memperlambat degradasi biodiesel B100 selama penyimpanan serta mengevaluasi pengaruh perubahan kualitas biodiesel terhadap performa mesin diesel. Penelitian dilakukan secara eksperimental dengan membandingkan biodiesel yang disimpan pada tangki terkondisi menggunakan nitrogen blanketing dan tangki tanpa perlakuan selama delapan minggu. Pengujian dilakukan setiap dua minggu terhadap parameter bilangan asam, kadar air (water content), jumlah mikroorganisme, serta performa mesin diesel yang meliputi torsi, daya, dan Specific Fuel Oil Consumption (SFOC). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa metode nitrogen blanketing mampu mempertahankan kualitas biodiesel lebih baik dibandingkan penyimpanan alami. Kadar air pada tangki terkondisi menurun sebesar 31,06%, sedangkan pada tangki tak terkondisi meningkat sebesar 51,55%. Bilangan asam pada tangki terkondisi menurun sebesar 16,94%, sedangkan pada tangki tak terkondisi meningkat sebesar 1,25%. Pada parameter jumlah mikroorganisme, kedua tangki menunjukkan pola perubahan yang berfluktuasi selama penyimpanan, dengan kecenderungan peningkatan pada tangki terkondisi dan kecenderungan penurunan pada tangki tak terkondisi. Selain itu, degradasi biodiesel selama penyimpanan menyebabkan penurunan torsi sebesar 8,69%, penurunan daya sebesar 9,04%, serta peningkatan SFOC sebesar 46,59%. Dapat disimpulkan, metode nitrogen blanketing terbukti efektif dalam memperlambat degradasi biodiesel berdasarkan parameter kadar air dan bilangan asam, sehingga kualitas bahan bakar dan performa mesin diesel dapat dipertahankan lebih baik dibandingkan penyimpanan alami.

B100 biodiesel is an environmentally friendly alternative fuel, however, it has relatively low storage stability due to oxidation, moisture absorption, and microbial growth. These degradation processes can alter the physicochemical properties of biodiesel, leading to a decline in diesel engine performance. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of the nitrogen blanketing method in slowing the degradation of B100 biodiesel during storage and to evaluate the effect of biodiesel quality deterioration on diesel engine performance. The study was conducted experimentally by comparing biodiesel stored in a nitrogen-blanketed conditioned tank with biodiesel stored in an unconditioned tank over an eight-week period. Tests were conducted every two weeks to evaluate acid number, water content, microbial count, and diesel engine performance, including torque, power output, and Specific Fuel Oil Consumption (SFOC). The results showed that the nitrogen blanketing method was more effective in maintaining biodiesel quality than natural storage. The water content in the conditioned tank decreased by 31.06%, whereas it increased by 51.55% in the unconditioned tank. The acid number in the conditioned tank decreased by 16.94%, while that in the unconditioned tank increased by 1.25%. Regarding microbial count, both storage conditions exhibited fluctuating patterns throughout the storage period, with an increasing trend in the conditioned tank and a decreasing trend in the unconditioned tank. In addition, biodiesel degradation during storage resulted in an 8.69% reduction in torque, a 9.04% reduction in power output, and a 46.59% increase in SFOC. It can be concluded that the nitrogen blanketing method proved effective in slowing biodiesel degradation based on the water content and acid number parameters, thereby maintaining fuel quality and diesel engine performance more effectively than natural storage.
