Abstract
Conventional long-term care facilities often prioritize operational efficiency and surveillance over human dignity, creating disorienting environments that accelerate cognitive decline and dependence among the elderly. Addressing this issue, this project establishes a Humanistic Architectural Framework to design a non-institutional elder care facility that fosters autonomy, spatial dignity, and quality of life. Integrating Juhani Pallasmaa’s architectural phenomenology with Don Norman’s Human-Centered Design, the design methodology utilizes Philip Plowright’s Pattern-Based Framework to systematically translate user needs into spatial systems across Macro, Meso, and Micro scales. Applied to a 12,000 m² site in Pantai Indah Kapuk, Jakarta, the resulting "Campus of Care" features three distinct typologies: a 3-storey administrative hub, 3-storey clustered care apartments, and single-storey independent landed units. Key design solutions include a dead-end-free circulation loop, hearth-centered residential clusters to encourage social connection, and sensory material transitions for intuitive wayfinding. Ultimately, the proposed prototype demonstrates how human-centered design principles successfully balance daily care needs with independence, proving that spatial dignity is an essential standard for enhancing elderly well-being.
