Abstract

Damar wood (Agathis Wood) is the basic material used in wood craft products. One of the wood crafting processes is steam bending, which uses hot steam. In the steam bending process, agathis wood requires optimal steam stability to soften the wood. However, in the steam generator system, there is a risk of overheating the heater if the water level in the steam generator tank is low and the formation of excessively wet steam if the water level in the tank is too high. To overcome this problem, a water level control system is needed in the steam generator tank for the wood bending process. The purpose of this system is to maintain the stability of the steam produced and prevent damage to the heater components caused by water shortage. This study uses an electrode water level sensor to detect the water level in the steam generator tank. When low water is detected, the system will activate a relay to command the solenoid valve to fill water from the feed water tank to the steam generator tank, and will stop filling when the water level is sufficient. A flow meter sensor is used to monitor the flow rate of water from the feed water tank to the steam generator tank during the filling process. Based on the results of experiments with this system, a control system has been created that is capable of maintaining the water level within optimal limits consistently, minimising potential damage to the heater, and increasing the efficiency of steam production for the steam bending process.
