Abstract

Lingkungan pada zaman modern, terutama yang penuh dengan stimulus visual dan sensorik (high-arousal), terbukti menjadi salah satu penyebab beban kognitif (cognitive load) dan visual stress yang menghambat perkembangan kontrol perhatian serta kemampuan sosial anak, khususnya pada usia 7–12 tahun yang berada dalam masa kritis pembentukan fungsi eksekutif. Kondisi ini dirasakan lebih berat oleh anak-anak dengan hambatan fungsional kognitif dan psikososial, seperti gangguan konsentrasi, perilaku-emosi, serta komunikasi dan belajar. Perancangan ini bertujuan menjawab permasalahan tersebut melalui pendekatan Cognitive Architecture, dengan strategi utama menciptakan Low-Arousal Environment yang mendukung efisiensi pemrosesan sensorik sekaligus memberikan rasa aman secara kognitif bagi penggunanya. Metode yang digunakan adalah Pattern-Based Framework, di mana pola-pola desain yang diperoleh dari kajian pustaka dan studi preseden divalidasi lebih lanjut melalui wawancara dengan para ahli sebelum diterapkan ke dalam rancangan. Hasil perancangan berupa fasilitas pendidikan dan terapi yang berlokasi di Kledokan, Sleman, Yogyakarta, dengan zonasi yang disusun berdasarkan gradien stimulasi, mulai dari zona publik dengan tingkat rangsangan tertinggi, kemudian zona komunal, zona edukasi, zona terapi, hingga zona restoratif dengan tingkat rangsangan terendah dalam lima zona yang saling terhubung. Rancangan ini diharapkan dapat menjadi acuan bagi pengembangan fasilitas serupa yang berfokus pada optimalisasi fungsi kognitif dan sosial anak melalui pendekatan arsitektural.

The modern environment, particularly one characterized by intense visual and sensory stimuli (high-arousal), has been shown to contribute to cognitive load and visual stress, which hinder the development of attention control and social skills in children, especially those aged 7–12 years who are in a critical stage of executive function development. This condition is more pronounced in children with cognitive and psychosocial functional impairments, including attention deficits, emotional and behavioral disorders, and communication and learning difficulties. This design addresses these challenges through a Cognitive Architecture approach, with the primary strategy of creating a Low-Arousal Environment that supports efficient sensory processing while fostering a sense of cognitive safety for its users. The design employs a Pattern-Based Framework, in which design patterns identified through literature reviews and precedent studies are further validated through expert interviews before being implemented. The proposed design is an educational and therapy facility located in Kledokan, Sleman, Yogyakarta, with zoning organized according to a stimulation gradient, beginning with the public zone featuring the highest level of stimulation, followed by the communal, educational, therapy, and restorative zones with the lowest level of stimulation, all interconnected through five integrated zones. This design is expected to serve as a reference for the development of similar facilities aimed at optimizing children's cognitive and social functions through an architectural approach.
