Abstract

The continuous growth of the global merchant fleet has led to increased energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the need for technologies that can improve ship propulsion efficiency. One of the promising technologies is the Grothues Spoiler, an Energy Saving Device (ESD) installed in the stern region to improve the flow distribution entering the propeller. This study aims to investigate the effect of a NACA 5715 Grothues Spoiler on the propulsion performance of a Japan Bulk Carrier, with particular emphasis on propeller thrust, and to determine the optimal Grothues Spoiler configuration. The study was conducted using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations coupled with the Shear Stress Transport (SST) k–ω turbulence model in ANSYS Fluent. Simulations were performed on a 1:40 scale model at a speed of 1.179 m/s, corresponding to a Froude number of 0.142, thereby satisfying dynamic similarity requirements. The investigated Grothues Spoiler configurations included variations in the number of spoilers and the angle of attack. An initial resistance analysis was carried out for all configurations, while the self-propulsion analysis was performed only on the configuration that exhibited the lowest resistance. The results demonstrate that the installation of the Grothues Spoiler modifies the stern flow characteristics by producing a more uniform inflow to the propeller, reducing vortex formation, and consequently improving propulsion performance. The optimum configuration was identified as Grothues Spoiler Configuration 04, consisting of three foils with a 0° angle of attack, which achieved a 3.413% reduction in total resistance. This configuration also improved the hull–propeller interaction, resulting in a 2.451% increase in propeller thrust, a 0.782% reduction in propeller torque, a hull efficiency of 1.635, a relative rotative efficiency of 1.059, and an overall propulsive efficiency of 0.857, compared with the baseline configuration without a Grothues Spoiler. These findings indicate that the selection of an appropriate Grothues Spoiler configuration, particularly in terms of the number of foils and their installation position, plays a crucial role in enhancing the propulsion performance of bulk carrier vessels.
