Abstract

The Surabaya City Community West Side School Teacher Housing and TC House projects demonstrate the application of an architectural approach that addresses various design challenges, including functionality, environmental context, and user needs. In both projects, the implementation of the 13 competency standards established by the Indonesian Institute of Architects (IAI) serves as the primary foundation for ensuring the quality, reliability, and sustainability of the design outcomes. Rusun Guru Sekolah Rakyat Surabaya was designed as a residential facility for teachers within the Sekolah Rakyat Surabaya complex, adopting a formal and efficient design approach that responds to the surrounding urban context while considering the tropical climate and maximizing natural daylight. In contrast, TC House adopts a tropical minimalist concept that emphasizes user comfort, well-proportioned spatial organization, effective zoning, and the integration of structural systems with architectural aesthetics. In both projects, considerations of building scale, color composition, natural lighting, safety, and user comfort were incorporated from the earliest stages of the design process. Through these approaches, both designs provide solutions to spatial requirements, strengthen the relationship between people and the built environment, and promote sustainable architectural practices. This study highlights that the success of an architectural design depends on the architect's ability to analyze user requirements, apply established design standards, and integrate ethical and aesthetic considerations to create spaces that are functional, high-quality, and meaningful for their users.
