Abstract

Pathogenic urban environmental pressures frequently trigger a crisis of hidden burnout among citizens, leaving them trapped in a spatial dilemma between stigmatizing medical facilities and urban parks that remain exposed to environmental stressors. In response, this design aims to introduce an Urban Collective Space positioned between these two extremes, situated along the Simpang Dukuh and Tunjungan corridors as a preventive public space grounded in salutogenic architecture. Methodologically, the design adopts a deductive approach utilizing a Concept-Based Framework, proposing the overarching concept that architecture can be engineered as an antibody, a proactive environmental agent tasked with cultivating collective immunity against the negative meanings of urban stressors. The process begins with empirical research methods, including site observations and precedent studies, which are subsequently translated into design strategies through the method of analogy. The building borrows the mechanism of the body's immune system to function as a symbolic antibody, where its four defense phases Recognition, Binding, Neutralization, and Activation are operationalized as an architectural sequence to filter urban harshness and mitigate the user's sensory load. This design yields a spatial ecosystem that merges social (Nourishment Hub), productive (Co-Creation Commons), and restorative (Therapeutic Courtyard) functions. Grounded in symbolic interactionism, the design manipulates physical elements to transform symbols of urban stress into approachable spatial experiences. This shift in meaning positions architecture as a Generalised Resistance Resource (GRR), a place that normalizes pause and inoculates the mental resilience of the urban populace.
