Abstract

This study aims to analyse and compare the buckling behaviour of pillar connected to brackets using two different methods: experimental testing and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The experimental was conducted using compression setup to observe the deformation and critical buckling load. Meanwhile, the simulation was performed using Ansys Workbench Static Structural and Eigenvalue Buckling with the same geometry, boundary conditions, and loading parameters. The results from both methods were compared in terms of Equivalent (von-Mises) Stress and Total Deformation. The comparison shows that the Finite Element Analysis simulation produces results that are close to the experimental data, with small percentage difference. This validates the use of Finite Element Analysis as a reliable tool to predict buckling behaviour in ship structural components with a certain amount of margin. The results can be useful in future design optimization without the need for physical testing.
