Abstract

Elite football training facilities have historically been developed in isolation from their surroundings to provide both security and privacy, in addition to supporting operational efficiency. Although this method enables the highest levels of performance in elite football, it has limited the ability of the elite football training facility to engage with the local community. This research seeks to investigate how an elite football performance campus may be able to remain private operationally but still connect with the local community through use of public open spaces. The study uses Force-Based Design Methodology as the basis for architectural design decision-making processes. In using this methodology, architectural design decisions will be made based on the interaction of contextual, functional, environmental and theoretical forces and not as part of a linear design process. A literature review was undertaken to establish current trends in elite football performance campuses and their integration into the wider urban environment. The resultant proposal develops a gradient of privacy that moves away from the rigid separation of public and private spaces found in many elite football performance campuses towards a layered hierarchy of public, academy and first-team spaces. Integration into the local community occurs through public access to Hengrove Park remaining available, provision of common-use facilities throughout the campus, preservation of established pedestrian routes connecting the campus to other parts of the city, whilst allowing for elite operational needs.
