Abstract

The Bendo Irrigation Area (3,243 ha) receives its water supply from the Bendo Dam and three downstream supplement rivers. Although the existing Cropping Index (CI) has reached 293% (exceeding the 260% target), the utilization of water resources is not yet fully optimal due to fluctuations in the balance between water availability and demand in each planting period. This research aims to maximize water utilization through the analysis of water availability, water requirements, water balance, and cropping pattern optimization. Water availability analysis was calculated using the F.J. Mock method, calibrated against recorded discharge data. To evaluate the water allocation balance, a sequential water balance simulation was conducted; routing the flow from the Bendo Dam release to six downstream weirs by integrating the additional supplement discharge. The results of this simulation were then used as the basis for optimizing the cropping pattern. The results showed that the dependable water availability of the Bendo Dam under normal year conditions (Q50%) is 3.9891 m³/s. This supply is supported by the potential supplement flow (Q80%) from the Sawoo River (0.0392 m³/s), Sono River (0.0109 m³/s), and Kemuning River (0.1682 m³/s). The water balance simulation proved that this integrated supply combination can fulfill the entire irrigation water requirement. Based on the optimization results through shifting the start of the planting season, the land CI was successfully increased from 293% to 300%, and the rice CI significantly increased from 218% to 269%. Additionally, the area of fallow land was successfully reduced from 212 ha to 0 ha. This demonstrates that regulating cropping patterns based on sequential water balance simulations can maximize land utilization intensity without reducing the reliability of water fulfillment, thus highly recommended for a more sustainable management of the Bendo Irrigation Area.
