Abstract

Architecture is frequently framed through typology, with categories such as houses, factories, and offices shaping design in advance. Historically, typology has been regarded as a rational framework of continuity and performance (Rossi, 1966), from Quatremère de Quincy’s formulation of ‘type’ as essence to Aldo Rossi’s claim that typology represents “the very idea of architecture.” Yet typology’s persistence has become increasingly problematic. As Nikos Salingaros argues, typologies do not endure because of necessity or performance but because they replicate memetically, spreading through institutional power and cultural habit. This repetition not only oversimplifies human needs but also sustains architectural inertia, producing environments that are rigid, alienating, and ecologically unfit. Typology conceals the systemic conditions that actually sustain building: material transformations, infrastructural flows, and human interaction, therefore typology prevents architecture from engaging critically with contemporary realities.
This project confronts the failure of typological repetition by repositioning architecture as a process-first practice. Instead of beginning from inherited categories, the design is grounded in sequences of material and infrastructural operations that generate space. Drawing on Reyner Banham’s recognition of systems as the true substance of architecture, Bernard Rudofsky’s demonstration of vernacular adaptation beyond typology, and the absurd logic of Thomas Thwaites’ Toaster Project as a method of exposing hidden dependencies, the project develops a chain of micro-architectures that correspond to stages of material transformation, each accommodating the spatial and human needs of the process. These fragments form a process-based network in which typology emerges only as a secondary residue. By uncovering the hidden systems of everyday production, the project resists cultural inertia and proposes an adaptive counter-practice for architectural contexts where typological memory is absent or inadequate.
