Abstract

Biomarker analysis of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons was conducted on Escrafos condensate samples from the Niger Delta Basin to investigate the source of organic matter, thermal maturity, and depositional environment. The results indicate that the condensate was derived from a mixed aquatic/marine and terrestrial organic matter source. This interpretation is supported by the predominance of short-chain n-alkanes with a unimodal distribution pattern and by geochemical parameters including LMW/HMW, LHCPI, Paq, TAR, CPI, Waxiness Index, the $8\beta(\text{H})$-homodrimane/$8\beta(\text{H})$-drimane ratio, and 9-methylphenanthrene (9-MP), which suggest significant aquatic/marine organic matter input. In addition, the presence of cadalene reflects contributions from terrestrial higher plants. The Hunt diagram further places the sample within a mixed-source domain. The condensate exhibits a high level of thermal maturity, as indicated by the dominance of short-chain n-alkanes, CPI and OEP values approaching unity, a higher abundance of $17\alpha(\text{H}),21\beta(\text{H})$-hopane relative to $17\beta(\text{H}),21\alpha(\text{H})$-moretane, and the values of MPI-1, %Rc, MPR, and DNR-1. The depositional environment is interpreted as transitional or mixed, with variable redox conditions, based on the Pr/Ph ratio, CPI–OEP plot, and the distribution of drimane and homodrimane compounds. Furthermore, TAR values and the occurrence of 9-MP indicate deposition under marine conditions. Overall, the Escrafos condensate originated from a mixture of aquatic/marine and terrestrial organic matter deposited in a transitional environment and has undergone a high degree of thermal maturity.
