Abstract

Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) play a crucial role in supplying demineralized water as makeup water for the water and steam cycle at coal-fired power plants (PLTU). One of the key components in this system is the Demineralized Storage Tank (DST), which requires level monitoring to ensure water availability and prevent overflow. However, under current conditions at PLN Nusantara Power UP Paiton Units 1 & 2, DST level monitoring still relies on pressure gauges that interpret pressure as level, and since these pressure gauges require routine manual observation, overflows frequently occur during the intervals between observations, resulting in water loss. This study recommends the use of a Differential Pressure Transmitter (DPT) as a solution for continuous level monitoring. The problem flow was analyzed using the Root Cause Failure Analysis 5 Why 1 Solution method, and instrument selection was conducted by comparing several alternatives based on cost, safety, and installation aspects using the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) method. The analysis results show that the DPT achieved the highest final KPI score of 0.878, making it the recommended solution for improving the reliability of level monitoring and minimizing the potential for overflow in the WTP system.
