Abstract

This research aims to design and implement a temperature control system at the condenser outlet in a Loop Heat Pipe (LHP)-based Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) to maintain the thermal stability of electric vehicle batteries. Temperature control is focused on the working fluid at the condenser outlet, which represents a critical point in the heat transfer process. The cooling system employs a hybrid configuration utilizing a radiator and circulating coolant as an additional heat rejection medium. Temperature monitoring is carried out using a three-wire RTD PT100 sensor installed at the condenser outlet, while the working fluid flow is automatically regulated by an on-off control logic-based valve actuator with a temperature threshold of 35°C. The entire system is controlled by an Arduino Mega 2560 microcontroller. Validation results indicate that temperature sensor 1 has a percentage error of 0.11% with an accuracy of 98.89%, while temperature sensor 2 has a percentage error of 0.074% with an accuracy of 99.93%. These results demonstrate that both sensors exhibit good measurement precision and are suitable for temperature data acquisition in the BTMS. Testing of the condenser cooling system shows a change in the temperature difference between the condenser inlet and outlet (ΔT) from 6.25°C under pump-off conditions to 5.81–7.16°C during active cooling, with the highest ΔT of 7.16°C occurring at 100% pump speed. This indicates an improved heat rejection capability approaching the thermal operating limit of the system. Furthermore, testing of the working fluids reveals that the use of acetone in the LHP-based BTMS provides better cooling performance than ethanol, as indicated by an average condenser inlet-outlet temperature difference (ΔT) of 6–7°C, whereas ethanol produces a ΔT of less than 1°C.
