Abstract

Floating waste in urban lakes has become an environmental issue that degrades water quality and reduces the aesthetic value of public recreational areas. One of the affected locations is InfinITS Park Lake at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), where floating plastic waste, dry leaves, and aquatic vegetation are frequently found. This study aims to design and develop a garbage cleaning robot boat for urban lakes and evaluate its performance through prototype testing. The research methodology began with problem identification, followed by literature review and site data collection to determine the operational requirements of the robot. Based on these requirements, a symmetrical catamaran garbage cleaning robot boat was designed and analyzed using Maxsurf software to evaluate its hydrostatic characteristics, resistance, and propulsion requirements. After the design satisfied the required criteria, a prototype was fabricated and subjected to performance testing under various garbage loading conditions. The proposed robot boat has principal dimensions of 1200 mm × 740 mm and a 100 L garbage collection basket positioned between the two hulls. Hydrostatic analysis resulted in an operating draft of 0.0988 m, while the predicted hydrodynamic resistance at the design speed of 2.10 knots was 0.0116 kN, indicating that the selected propulsion system was sufficient for the intended operation. Battery capacity analysis recommended 6500 mAh for the propulsion system, 4000 mAh for the weed cutter system, and 500 mAh for the FPV monitoring system. Performance testing showed that the prototype achieved maximum speeds of 2.10 knots under full-throttle conditions and 1.77 knots under half-throttle conditions without payload. As the collected dry leaf weight increased from 0 kg to 12 kg, the draft increased from 0.0988 m to 0.1402 m, the displacement increased from 26.67 kg to 38.67 kg, and the operating speed gradually decreased while maintaining stable operation. The prototype was capable of carrying up to 12 kg of collected dry leaves, demonstrating that the proposed design satisfies the operational requirements for lightweight floating waste collection in urban lake environments.
