Abstract
Repair welding has become an economical alternative to replacing damaged martensitic stainless-steel turbine components. However, the combined influence of filler metal selection and post-weld tempering temperature on corrosion performance remains insufficiently understood. This study investigates the effect of ERNiCr-3 and ER410 filler metals combined with tempering temperatures of 588°C and 620°C on the corrosion properties of GTAW-welded AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel. Four welded mock-up specimens were fabricated using identical welding parameters, followed by tempering for one hour. Optical microscopy, SEM/EDS analysis, Vickers microhardness testing, and Potentiodynamic polarization tests in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution were conducted to evaluate the electrochemical behavior of the weld metal and heat-affected zone (HAZ). The results demonstrate that ERNiCr-3 provided superior corrosion resistance at 588°C, whereas ER410 exhibited the best overall corrosion performance after tempering at 620°C. Tempering at 588°C, the weld area with ERNiCr-3 filler metal exhibited lower corrosion current density and corrosion rate than ER410 due to the formation of Ni-rich austenitic weld metal that promoted a stable passive film. Under this condition, the weldment exhibited only a slight increase in corrosion current density compared with the original base metal, indicating that the Ni-rich weld metal effectively maintained the corrosion resistance of the welded joint. In contrast, the ER410 weldment showed a reduction in corrosion current density and corrosion rate after tempering, which correlated with the formation of a more homogeneous tempered martensitic microstructure while maintaining nearly unchanged Fe–Cr chemistry across the weld.
