Abstract

Microplastic pollution in marine environments has become a global issue that has the potential to threaten the health of aquatic biota and humans through the food chain. Grouper (Epinephelus spp.) is a high-value fish that is potentially exposed to microplastics due to anthropogenic activities in the aquatic environment. This study aims to determine the level of microplastic abundance, identify polymer types, and analyze the physical characteristics of microplastics based on shape, size, and color in grouper fish traded at the Surabaya Pabean Fish Market. The research samples consisted of large and small grouper fish obtained from the Surabaya Pabean Fish Market. The organs observed included the digestive tract, gills, and flesh. Microplastic identification was carried out through a sample destruction process using a 10% KOH solution, filtration, and observation using a stereo microscope. Polymer type analysis was carried out using the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) method. The research samples consisted of large and small grouper fish obtained from the Surabaya Pabean Fish Market. The organs observed included the digestive tract, gills, and flesh. Microplastic identification was carried out through sample destruction using a 10% KOH solution, filtration, and observation using a stereo microscope. Polymer type analysis was carried out using the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) method. The results showed that all grouper samples were contaminated with microplastics. The number of microplastics in large fish reached 147 particles, higher than in small fish which amounted to 98 particles. Microplastics were found in all organs observed with the highest abundance in the digestive tract. The characteristics of microplastics were dominated by fragment form, a size of 1–40 μm, and black color. The results of the FTIR analysis showed that microplastics had spectral similarities with acrylate-based polymer groups, namely polyacrylic acid with a library match rate of around 77–80%.
