Abstract

Artisanal hookah divers in small-scale fisheries depend continuously on a surface compressor, long breathing-air hose, and surface attendant. In Kenjeran, preliminary scoping and transferred occupational evidence indicated gaps in depth and elapsed-time awareness, recognition of possible delivery-path anomalies, surface-todiver warning, and emergency coordination. This study develops and documents an early-stage safety-support prototype for these information and coordination needs. Field and published evidence, standards, and technology benchmarking informed the context-of-use analysis, role-specific needs, solution-neutral requirements, and preimplementation functional brief. After collaborative implementation with Elmech, an evidence-weighted House of Quality, selective technology-transfer analysis, qualitative FMEA, weighted decision matrices, component assessment, and requirements traceability were used for post-implementation prioritisation and designrisk consolidation. The as-built prototype includes a forearm-mounted diver module, boat-mounted display/control and power assembly, approximately 50 m wired diversurface pathway, surface-referenced location support, and provisional compressor-side turbine input. The manual surface-to-diver blinking red cue and elapsed-time display/logging provide awareness support, while automatic warning mappings remain incomplete. The turbine is an uncalibrated relative proxy and cannot confirm breathing adequacy, gas quality, or a specific supply fault. No calibration, waterproofing, reliability, usability, or field-effectiveness testing was conducted. The contribution is a traceable design record and future verification pathway, not evidence that the prototype prevents diving injury.
