Abstract

The development of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies has grown rapidly, particularly in adsorption-based carbon capture. Porous materials such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), especially the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) subclass, have attracted considerable attention due to their high adsorption capacity. However, one of the key factors affecting the adsorption performance of ZIF-8 and other MOFs is their crystallinity. The effects of varying the ligand-to-salt mass ratio on crystal formation have not been fully understood, while sonochemical synthesis has the potential to accelerate the reaction through the natural cavitation phenomenon. In this study, ZIF-8 was synthesized using two different synthesis parameters: ligand-to-salt mass variations of 1, 2, and 4 g, denoted as ZIF-8 m1, ZIF-8 m2, and ZIF-8 m4, respectively, and sonication times of 10, 20, and 30 min, denoted as ZIF-8 t10, ZIF-8 t20, and ZIF-8 t30, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed that all synthesized samples possessed well-ordered crystalline structures and successfully formed the sodalite (SOD) topology. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy identified a characteristic absorption band at approximately 420 cm⁻¹, corresponding to the Zn–N stretching vibration. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the synthesized particles predominantly exhibited a truncated rhombic dodecahedron morphology accompanied by nanoparticle aggregates, which were attributed to the relatively low precursor molar ratio. The synthesized ZIF-8 materials exhibited relative crystallinity values of 81.28%, 100.00%, 80.76%, 83.93%, 66.67%, and 68.47% for ZIF-8 m1, ZIF-8 m2, ZIF-8 m4, ZIF-8 t10, ZIF-8 t20, and ZIF-8 t30, respectively. ZIF-8 m2 was selected as the reference material because it exhibited the highest diffraction peak intensity.
