Abstract

Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches (OPEFB) are plantation waste with potential for use as a building material, but their application still requires further development. Previous studies have mainly examined OPEFB characteristics at the material scale, while its response as a wall panel at the room scale remains underexplored. This study aims to explore the thermal performance of wall panels with variations in OPEFB processing methods and composition.
A quantitative experimental method was employed using five panel variations: one control panel, two panels produced using the densified method, and two using the reconfigured method. The panels were installed in 1.2 × 1.2 × 1.2 m test cells and evaluated under a humid tropical climate in Surabaya. The measured parameters included air temperature, relative humidity, and air velocity. The data were analyzed by comparing the panel variations with outdoor conditions, the control cell, and SNI 03-6572-2001.
The results show that differences in material composition and properties produced different thermal responses. The synthetic binder (SB) panel produced the highest indoor temperature, peaking at 35–36 °C during the daytime, while the bio binder (BB) panel produced the highest relative humidity, peaking at 87–88%. The binderless KR 0.4 and KR 0.7 panels showed more moderate conditions, with the ability to reduce indoor temperature by approximately 3–4% compared to the control cell during the morning period. However, the density variations restricted air movement to below 0.05 m/s, and were therefore insufficient to control the overall thermal conditions of the test cells. Overall, none of the panels achieved thermal comfort conditions according to SNI. Nevertheless, the processing methods produced distinct visual characteristics, demonstrating the potential of OPEFB as a waste-based architectural material.
