Abstract

This study utilized magnetic waste from zircon sand processing to develop Metal–Organic Framework (MOF)-based and porous metal oxide materials as adsorbents and photocatalysts for cationic dye treatment in water. The research aimed to synthesize α-Fe₂O₃/ZnO@MIL-100(Fe)-MZT and evaluate its characteristics and performance in adsorption and photodegradation. MIL-100(Fe)-MZT was successfully synthesized at room temperature and used as a support for porous α-Fe₂O₃/ZnO derived from the MOF precursor. Characterization results confirmed the successful formation of MIL-100(Fe)-MZT and the porous crystalline structure of α-Fe₂O₃/ZnO. The resulting α-Fe₂O₃/ZnO@MIL-100(Fe)-MZT composite exhibited interfacial interactions between the MOF and semiconductor phases, accompanied by increased specific surface area and pore diameter compared with pristine MIL-100(Fe)-MZT. The composite demonstrated excellent performance as an adsorbent and photocatalyst for Malachite Green (MG) and Rhodamine B (RhB), achieving removal efficiencies of 99.56% and 97.31%, respectively. Adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, with maximum adsorption capacities of 333.33 mg g⁻¹ for MG and 256.41 mg g⁻¹ for RhB. The process occurred spontaneously and was dominated by chemical interactions. Photodegradation followed first-order kinetics, indicating efficient degradation performance. LC–MS analysis confirmed dye degradation through the conversion of complex aromatic structures into simpler and more oxidized compounds, evidenced by shorter retention times.
