Abstract

Road bicycles are characterised by a riding posture that prioritises aerodynamic efficiency through a forward-leaning body position. However, this posture may increase biomechanical loads on certain body regions and contribute to the risk of musculoskeletal complaints when it does not correspond to the rider’s anthropometric characteristics. Road bicycle stems generally have a fixed configuration, resulting in limited adjustability of the riding position. This study aims to analyse the design of an adjustable road bicycle stem based on ergonomic and biomechanical considerations. The research was conducted by designing an adjustable stem prototype and performing experimental testing by comparing the conditions before using the default stem and after using the adjustable stem prototype. Tests were conducted on 30 participants using motion capture to measure changes in trunk flexion angle, biomechanical analysis to determine changes in trunk moment, and the SNI 9011 questionnaire to evaluate the risk of musculoskeletal complaints. The results showed that the adjustable stem prototype increased the average trunk flexion angle from 30.73° to 52.90°, representing a change of 22.17°. Biomechanical analysis also demonstrated a reduction in the average trunk moment from 193.94 Nm to 136.13 Nm. Furthermore, the ergonomic evaluation indicated a decrease in the level of musculoskeletal complaint risk among the participants. Based on these findings, the adjustable stem prototype was able to provide a more adaptive riding-position configuration and improve the ergonomic aspects of road cycling.
