Abstract

Wastewater containing nitrogen compounds such as urea must be treated before being discharged into the environment, as it can increase nutrient loading and contribute to the degradation of water quality. This study aimed to fabricate high density polyethylene (HDPE)-based membranes with the addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface coating for urea separation. The membranes were fabricated using the thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method with PVP variations of 0, 0.5, 0.75, and 1%. PDMS coating was applied to selected membrane variations to evaluate the effect of surface modification on membrane characteristics and performance. Membrane characterization was carried out using FTIR, XRD, SEM, water contact angle, and porosity analysis to evaluate the chemical structure and physical properties of the membranes. The characterization results indicated that the addition of PVP improved membrane surface wettability, while PDMS coating modified the surface characteristics without altering the main chemical structure of HDPE. Membrane performance was evaluated through pure water flux, urea flux, and urea rejection tests. The results showed that the M0,5 membrane produced the highest pure water flux and urea flux, with values of 23.803 and 26.174 L m⁻² h⁻¹, respectively. The M0.5-PDMS membrane exhibited a slightly higher urea rejection (55.824%) than the M0.5 membrane (55.374%), although this improvement was accompanied by a significant decrease in flux due to the increased transport resistance introduced by the PDMS coating. The addition of 0,5% PVP resulted in the most favorable liquid transport performance because it improved surface wettability and promoted the formation of effective pore pathways. However, increasing the PVP concentration did not lead to a linear increase in flux. PDMS coating decreased the flux due to the formation of a surface layer that increased resistance to liquid transport. Based on these results, the M0,5 membrane showed the best flux performance, whereas PDMS coating played a more dominant role in modifying the membrane surface characteristics without altering the main chemical structure of HDPE.
