Abstract

The advancement of digital technology has promoted the adoption of Virtual Reality (VR) as a simulation medium in various fields, including interior design education. VR enables the creation of immersive digital environments that closely resemble real spaces, supporting the development of students' spatial abilities in understanding form, proportion, and spatial experience. This study aims to analyze the use of VR-based digital spaces with a realistic rendering approach as a simulation medium to support the spatial abilities of interior design students. A mixed-method approach was employed by comparing participants' experiences in real and virtual environments. Participants visited the H.O.S. Tjokroaminoto Museum before exploring its VR simulation. The museum was selected due to its complex spatial circulation, making it suitable for evaluating spatial abilities. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test questionnaires, as well as user observations. The findings indicate that realistic rendering enabled participants to recognize the spatial characteristics of the H.O.S. Tjokroaminoto Museum and provided an experience comparable to a direct visit. Furthermore, VR demonstrated strong potential as an educational medium by fostering a high sense of presence while inducing minimal cybersickness.
