Abstract

Conventional hemoglobin measurement is generally performed using an invasive blood sampling method, which may cause discomfort, increase the risk of infection, and generate medical waste. This study aims to develop a non-invasive hemoglobin measuring system based on a dual-wavelength optical sensor using the Modified Beer-Lambert Law (MBLL) and to evaluate the performance of the developed system. The system employs 660 nm and 940 nm LEDs as light sources, a BPW34S photodiode as the optical sensor, a signal conditioning circuit, and an ESP32 microcontroller for data processing. The acquired signals are processed using a Butterworth Band-Pass Filter, and the MBLL method is applied to estimate hemoglobin concentration. The system was evaluated using 110 participants by comparing the non-invasive measurements with invasive hemoglobin measurements as the reference. The results show that the developed system is capable of estimating hemoglobin concentration non-invasively with a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 4.26 g/dL, an accuracy of 70.31%, and a measurement range of 6.7–11.4 g/dL.
