Abstract

Methylene blue (MB) is a cationic dye widely used in the textile, printing, and pharmaceutical industries; it is persistent and therefore has the potential to contaminate aquatic environments. The combination of adsorption and photocatalysis is one effective method for removing this pollutant. This study aims to synthesize BiOBr-coated sodium alginate (SA)/ZSM-5 granules with varying sodium alginate concentrations (2, 4, 6, and 8%) and to examine their effect on the material’s characteristics and methylene blue decolorization activity. The SA/ZSM-5 granules were synthesized using the ionic gelation method with a CaCl2 solution as the crosslinking agent and then coated with BiOBr via the coprecipitation method. The synthesized materials were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray (FESEM-EDX), and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS). Decolorization activity was tested using a 30 ppm methylene blue solution under UV-LED irradiation for 120 minutes. The characterization results showed that the crystalline phases of BiOBr and ZSM-5 were successfully formed and that BiOBr was distributed on the surface of the granules. Variations in sodium alginate concentration affected the morphology, surface area, and decolorization activity of the material. For SA/ZSM-5 granules without BiOBr coating, the highest adsorption capacity was obtained at a 2% SA G concentration (54.79%), while the highest photocatalytic contribution was obtained at a 4% SA G concentration (5.34%). After BiOBr coating, the decolorization efficiency increased to 66–69%, with the highest reaction rate constant of 0.0316 min-1 at the 6% SA GB concentration. However, the 4% SA GB concentration showed a comparable decolorization efficiency of 68.69% and was therefore selected as a composition with potential for further development.
